Interior painting, in short

iPaintHomes paints the inside of existing homes across the East Valley: walls, ceilings, two-story entries and stair walls, trim, doors and built-ins. Nail holes, dings and cracks in the drywall are patched before any paint goes on, and floors and fixtures are covered first. It is for homeowners refreshing a few rooms or the whole house, often with a new color scheme.

What the work covers

  • Walls and accent walls
  • Ceilings, vaulted ones included
  • Two-story entries and stair landings
  • Baseboards, door casings and doors
  • Built-ins and entertainment walls
  • Drywall patching before paint

Pricing

What interior painting costs

In Tim Rochford's experience, most Arizona homeowners spend between $1,500 and $5,000 for a full interior repaint of an average-sized home.

From Tim Rochford’s post on how often to repaint interior walls

Tim Rochford writes the estimates and checks in on every job. He measures each room at the visit, so your estimate is a price for your house, not an average.

Paint is part of that price. Tim Rochford uses premium paints such as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore.

You do not have to paint the whole house at once. One room, a hallway or a single accent wall can be its own job, and the estimate prices only the rooms you pick.

Covering, masking and patching happen before the first coat, so the paint goes on smooth walls while the floors and fixtures stay covered.

  1. Tim measures each room

He walks the rooms with you, measures, and notes the ceiling heights, the trim and doors, and any drywall that needs repair.

  2. Colors and a written estimate

You talk through colors in the rooms they are meant for. The estimate lists the rooms, the surfaces, the prep and the paint.

  3. Cover, mask and patch

Floors and fixtures are covered, and edges are masked with paper and tape. Nail holes, dings and cracks are patched and sanded before paint.

  4. Ceilings, walls, then trim

Paint goes on from the top down: ceilings first, then walls, then baseboards, casings and doors, with the edges cut in by hand. Tim stops by to check the work, and the crew cleans up as they go.

He met with the crew daily and they were meticulous with difficult cut-ins on a vaulted ceiling.

His crew painted our dining room and living room walls and then came back and did our kitchen cabinets. Very professional, guys cleaned up every day.

We also liked that Tim stopped by the house everyday to check on the work that the guys were doing and ask us if we had any questions.

Color

Choosing interior colors in Arizona light

Color consultation is part of Tim Rochford's service. Sun through a south or west window changes how a color reads from morning to evening, so the samples go up in the rooms they are meant for, and you look at them more than once in a day.

A lighter color can make a small room feel bigger, and an accent wall puts one stronger color where you want the eye to go.

Finish matters as much as color. Matte hides small flaws in older walls and suits living rooms, bedrooms and ceilings. Satin has a slight sheen and wipes clean, which is why hallways, kitchens, bathrooms and kids’ rooms usually get it.

Tim’s posts on color consultation and matte, satin and gloss finishes go into both choices in more detail.

I’ve walked into homes where the south-facing wall in the living room looked noticeably lighter than the north-facing wall, same room, same paint job, just different sun exposure.

Questions

Interior painting questions, answered

How much does it cost to paint the inside of a house?

In Tim Rochford's experience, most Arizona homeowners spend between $1,500 and $5,000 for a full interior repaint of an average-sized home. Your own price comes from measuring your rooms, and it is written on your estimate.

How do I know it is time to repaint a room?

Look for color that has faded or gone uneven on sunny walls, scuffs that a damp cloth will not remove, paint peeling near a shower or other moisture, fine cracks in the paint film, and water or grease stains. Any one of these is a reason to have Tim look at the room.

Can your crew paint two-story walls and vaulted ceilings?

Yes. Tall entry walls, stair landings and vaulted ceilings are regular interior work. The floor is covered before the ladders go up, and the line where a wall meets the ceiling is cut in by hand.

Can Tim help me choose paint colors?

Color consultation is part of Tim Rochford's service. He looks at samples with you in the rooms they are meant for, in the light those rooms get.

What should I do before the painters arrive?

Ask Tim at the estimate visit what to move out of each room. Take down wall art and curtains and clear small items off shelves in the rooms being painted; large furniture can go to the middle of the room. Floors and fixtures are covered and the edges are masked with paper and tape before painting starts.
