Cabinet painting, in short
Cabinet painting puts new color on the cabinet boxes, doors and drawer fronts you already have, in kitchens, bathrooms and built-ins. It suits East Valley homeowners whose cabinets are solid but dated, worn or the wrong color for the house now. Pricing comes from an estimate visit: Tim Rochford counts the doors and drawers, checks the condition of the current finish and writes a price for your cabinets.
- What it covers
- Kitchen cabinet boxes, doors and drawer fronts, bathroom vanities, and painted built-ins such as entertainment walls, bookcases and shelving. Walls and trim in the same rooms can go on the same estimate.
- Who it is for
- Homeowners who like their layout and counters and want the cabinets in a new color. Paint changes the color and the finish. It does not fix warped doors or water damaged boxes, and those get pointed out at the visit.
- How pricing works
- Kitchens differ in how many doors, drawers and boxes they have and in what shape the old finish is, so there is no flat price. The estimate is written after Tim measures, and it lists what gets painted.
From finished jobs
Kitchens, vanities and built-ins
A kitchen in white under a tile backsplash, an entertainment wall in sage, and living room walls cut in around dark built-ins. Each photo is from a finished job.

Built-ins are cabinet work too
Entertainment walls, bookcases and built-in shelving get the same prep as kitchen cabinets, and they are painted in place. The sage wall kept its wood counter and back panel, so every edge where paint meets wood is a cut line.
In the living room, the walls are a warm tan around dark built-ins. Walls around cabinets can go on the same estimate as interior painting, and more homes are in the project gallery.
Choosing a color
A cabinet color, picked in your own light
Color consultation is part of Tim Rochford's service. A cabinet color has to sit beside counters, tile, floors and hardware that are staying, so it is best chosen in your kitchen, next to them, in the light that room gets through the day.
A white that looks clean on a sample card can turn yellow beside warm granite, and a gray can lean blue in a room with no direct sun. Holding samples against your own counters settles that before the paint is bought.
Tim Rochford uses premium paints such as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore. Cabinets get handled every day, so ask about the sheen at the visit as well as the color.
Keep a cabinet pull, a tile sample or a photo of the floor handy for the visit.
How a cabinet job goes
Measured, prepped, painted, rehung
Tim Rochford writes the estimates and checks in on every job. A cabinet job goes in this order, from the first visit to the last door going back on.
Tim measures
He counts the boxes, doors and drawer fronts, looks at the old finish and answers your questions about the process. The estimate is written from that visit.Doors and drawers
Each door and drawer front has a face, a back and four edges, and the hinges and pulls come off before any paint. Tim explains at the visit how the doors and drawers in your kitchen will be handled.Prep before paint
Kitchen cabinets collect cooking grease and hand oils. They are cleaned and sanded so the new coats bond, and the counters, floors and appliances are covered first.Time in your home
Every coat has to dry before the next one goes on, so cabinets take longer than walls. Ask Tim at the visit how long your kitchen will be a work area.

Tim came over and measured the kitchen and took the time to answer my questions and explain the process of painting my kitchen cabinets.
We have a large home and with the cabinet work it took some time for the work to be completed - and I’m glad they didn’t rush through it.
His crew painted our dining room and living room walls and then came back and did our kitchen cabinets. Very professional, guys cleaned up every day.
Questions
Cabinet painting questions
One estimate visit can also cover interior walls and ceilings, the outside of the house, and fences and gates.
Should I paint my kitchen cabinets or replace them?
Paint them if the boxes and doors are solid and you like the layout. Painting changes the color and finish and keeps the counters, sink and cabinets where they are. If doors are warped, boxes are water damaged or you want a new layout, replacement is the better job, and the estimate visit is the time to look at that together.
How is cabinet painting priced?
By what gets painted and the shape it is in: the boxes, doors, drawer fronts, vanities and built-ins, and how much cleaning and sanding the old finish needs. Tim Rochford measures at your home and writes the estimate, so the price is for your cabinets.
Can bathroom vanities and built-ins be painted too?
Yes. Bathroom vanities and built-ins such as entertainment walls and bookcases are the same kind of work as kitchen cabinets. They can be painted on their own or on the same estimate as a kitchen.
Who helps choose the cabinet color?
Color consultation is part of Tim Rochford's service. Samples are compared in your home, next to the counters, floors and hardware that are staying. Tim Rochford uses premium paints such as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore.
How long will my kitchen be a work area?
That depends on how many doors and drawers there are and how many coats the color change needs. Each coat has to dry before the next one goes on. Tim can tell you the schedule for your kitchen once he has measured it.
