Fences and gates, in short

Fence and gate painting covers the block walls, wrought iron, wood fences and gates around a home, and the backyard wood that goes with them. It is for East Valley homeowners whose walls are chalky, stained or peeling, whose iron is rusting, or whose wood has gone gray. Pricing comes from an estimate visit: Tim Rochford measures the runs of wall and fence, counts the gates and looks at the prep each surface needs.

What the crew paints around a yard

  • Block walls

Most East Valley yards are closed in by block walls. Painted block is washed down, chipped and cracked spots are patched, and the wall is painted to go with the house or the HOA color list.

  • Wrought iron

Iron fences, gates and railings rust first at the welds, the hinges and the bottoms of the pickets. Loose rust and flaking paint are scraped off, and bare metal is primed before the finish coats.

  • Wood fences and gates

Sun dries wood out and lifts old paint and stain. Loose fibers and flaking coats are sanded back before the wood is painted or stained again.

  • Pergolas and gazebos

A pergola or gazebo gets the same prep as a wood fence, from the posts up to the beams overhead, and it can be painted or stained.

From the street, a gate or a wall reads as part of the house. Painting them on the same job as the exterior of the house lets the wall and gate colors be picked with the body and trim. They can also be painted on their own, before or after the house.

Backyard walls and gates take the same sun as the house, and many take sprinkler spray as well. More homes and yards are in the project gallery.

Signs a wall, fence or gate is due

  • Paint rubs off on your hand as a chalky powder.
  • Rust shows at the welds, the hinges or the bottoms of iron pickets.
  • Paint is peeling or bubbling low on a block wall where sprinklers hit it.
  • Wood has turned gray, split or rough to the touch.
  • The walls and gates no longer match a freshly painted house.

Any one of these is worth pointing out at the estimate visit.

How the job goes

From the walk-around to the last coat

Arizona sun, sprinkler spray and monsoon storms work on a yard wall from both sides. Paint holds best on a surface that was cleaned and repaired first, so much of a fence job is prep.

Tim walks the yard with you at the visit.

  1. Tim walks the yard

He looks at each wall, fence and gate with you, measures the runs and counts the gates, and notes rust, loose boards, peeling paint and cracked block. The estimate is written from that walk.

  2. The colors get settled

Walls and gates can match the body or trim of the house, or follow an HOA color list. Color consultation is part of Tim Rochford's service.

  3. Cover, then prep

Plants, pavers, pool decks and anything against the fence get covered. Then comes the scraping, sanding, patching and spot priming each surface needs. On iron, loose rust comes off before primer touches the metal.

  4. Paint and clean up

The crew paints, and the yard is cleaned up before they leave, with the covers pulled and the gates working. Tim Rochford writes the estimates and checks in on every job.

I did not hesitate to bring them back this time to do some interior work and paint my outdoor gazebo (wood and roof), and they both came out looking great.

The crew went above and beyond with preparation, meticulously repairing caulking, stucco, and wood surfaces as needed, which is a true mark of quality.

Questions

Fence and gate questions

One estimate visit can also cover kitchen cabinets, rooms inside the house and the house exterior.

Which fences and gates does the crew paint?

Block walls, wrought iron fences, gates and railings, and wood fences and gates. Backyard wood such as pergolas and gazebos is part of the same work.

Can a fence or gate be painted with the house?

Yes. Walls and gates can go on the same estimate as an exterior repaint, so their colors are picked with the body and trim. They can also be painted on their own.

How is fence and gate painting priced?

By what is in the yard: the length and height of each wall or fence, the material, the number of gates, and how much scraping, patching and priming each surface needs. Tim Rochford measures at the estimate visit and writes the price for your yard.

Does an HOA have to approve the wall color?

Check your HOA rules before picking a color. If walls and gates have to match an approved color list, share the list or the approval letter at the estimate visit, and the colors on the estimate can follow it.

Should outdoor wood be painted or stained?

It depends on the wood and what is on it now. Tim looks at it at the estimate visit and recommends paint or stain for that wood.
